Digital Strategy for Small Biz Owners Who Wear All the Hats

Oct 12, 2025

I’ve written Instagram captions while stirring homemade soap, answered client emails between gardening breaks, and once scheduled an entire content calendar while sipping hot chocolate during a period drama binge.
In other words: I get it.

If you’re a woman running a small business, chances are you’re doing all the things—and probably wondering when you’re supposed to have time to “build a digital strategy.” You’re the CEO, customer service rep, content creator, bookkeeper, and probably the person who remembers to water the plants. (If the plants get watered at all.)

So let’s be real: traditional, hustle-heavy, agency-style digital strategy? Not gonna work here.

The good news? You don’t need to do more. You just need to do what matters most—on purpose.

Let’s break down what a small business digital strategy actually looks like when you’re a woman juggling life, clients, and maybe a soap mold or two.

Why “Doing It All” Doesn’t Mean Doing It Well

One of the biggest myths I see?
The idea that you have to be on every platform, all the time, with perfectly polished content.

Nope.

That kind of pressure leads to digital burnout—not digital growth. When I tried to post daily on three platforms, blog weekly, and run a Facebook group all at once, guess what happened?
Nothing. I was exhausted, engagement dropped, and my content started to feel robotic.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me:
You’re allowed to grow slowly and sustainably. Strategy is not about doing everything—it’s about doing the right things in the right way for you.

What a Soulful Digital Strategy Actually Looks Like

A good strategy is like a garden plan. It’s intentional, seasonal, and built around your needs.
Let’s redefine strategy:

  • It’s not about being everywhere. It’s about being present somewhere.
  • It’s not about constant creation. It’s about consistent communication.
  • It’s not about big audiences. It’s about real connection.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s your real goal? (Visibility? More clients? Connection?)
  • Where is your audience actually spending time?
  • What kind of content are you excited to create?

Pick 1 or 2 platforms and do them really well. That’s more powerful than half-heartedly spreading yourself thin across five.

The 3-Part Framework I Use with Every Client

When I work with women in small business, especially those in regional or remote areas, this is the simple framework I come back to every time:

1. Clarity
Who are you talking to? What do they need? What are you trying to say?
Clarity is your foundation. Without it, even the fanciest funnel won’t help.

2. Consistency
Not daily. Not perfect. Just steady.
If you can commit to one post a week, start there. You can always grow.

3. Connection
Social media is about being social. Don’t just post—engage.
Respond to comments. Share a story. Ask questions. Show up as you.

🌱 Think of this like your digital garden: clarity plants the seed, consistency waters it, and connection helps it grow.

My Must-Have Tools to Make It Easier

Let’s talk tech—but keep it simple.

🧰 Here are a few tools I recommend:

  • Notion – For planning content (and life)
  • Later – For scheduling social media ahead of time
  • Canva – For creating graphics without needing a design degree

💡 Insider Tip from Christene: I batch my content every second Friday with a cup of organic cocoa and my favourite Jane Austen film playing in the background. I call it “Cocoa & Content Day.” It’s one of the most productive and joyful parts of my workflow.

But you don’t need fancy software to start. A paper planner, voice notes, or even sticky notes can be your strategy starter kit.

Start Small—Here’s What to Do This Week

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the strategy talk, start here:

✅ Choose 1 platform to focus on
✅ Plan 1 intentional piece of content that speaks to your audience
✅ Schedule 1 time this week to engage with your followers (comments, messages, etc.)
✅ Start a “What’s Working” journal—track what feels good and what gets response

Small steps add up to serious momentum.

You Don’t Need to Master Everything—Just What Matters

You don’t need a viral reel, a 6-week funnel, or a 90-day content plan today.
What you do need is permission to build your business around your life—not the other way around.

You already know your audience. You already care deeply. You already have the heart for this.

Now you have a strategy to support it. Need more strategy support beyond this blog? Schedule your free strategy session here!

You’re not doing it wrong. You’re doing enough. And I’m cheering you on every step of the way.

The lazy-girl way to build a content calendar that works

Let me guess:You’ve downloaded 47 content calendar templates… and used none of them. Same. If content planning makes you want to cry into your hot chocolate, I want you to know you’re not alone—and you’re not doing it wrong. The problem isn’t you. It’s the...
